At The Thinnai, sustainability is more than just a core value; it is the guiding principle behind everything we do. Since opening in August 2016, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to minimising our environmental impact, fostering a sustainable future, and playing an active role in the global response to the climate crisis. As a responsible business, we prioritise both the well-being of our stakeholders and the preservation of our planet for future generations. Our dedication to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) shapes every decision we make, helping us protect the environment, improve lives, and contribute to long-term solutions to the climate crisis.
Sustainability is a continuous journey, and we are committed to improving our practices to make a lasting, positive impact. Our dedication to the SDGs is an ongoing effort, and we pledge to evolve to meet future challenges. We hope to adopt more SDGs in the future to expand our commitment to global sustainability efforts. By embracing sustainability, we aim to leave a legacy of environmental and social responsibility for generations to come.
Education is key to driving sustainable development. At The Thinnai, we encourage environmental awareness in local schools by promoting practices such as organic farming, waste segregation, and other sustainable practices among students. Additionally, we provide aid to underprivileged students by supplying stationery and other educational materials to support their learning journeys.
At The Thinnai, we believe in equal opportunities for everyone. Our commitment to gender equality is reflected in our recruitment practices, ensuring fairness in hiring, and in our partnerships with communities that promote inclusivity.
We are committed to ensuring clean water and sanitation for all. Our on-site water treatment plant plays a crucial role in conserving water resources by recycling and reusing wastewater for irrigation, reducing our environmental impact and contributing to sustainable water management practices.
In Jaffna, groundwater serves as the primary source of water for drinking, domestic, and agricultural needs. However, the quality of this vital resource is deteriorating due to pollutants from fertilisers, pesticides, and nearby latrines seeping into the aquifers, while excessive pumping exacerbates the problem of seawater intrusion. It is essential that we take measures to conserve water and reduce water pollution. As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, we continually assess and improve our water usage practices to help safeguard this critical resource for the local community and future generations.
We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint through clean energy solutions. Our property is designed with energy efficiency in mind, featuring LED lighting, solar-powered lighting for pathways and hot water systems, and energy-saving technologies such as VRF air conditioning and key card-controlled energy management. We are also exploring opportunities to install a solar power system, which will further reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.
As a local business, we are committed to fostering community growth. We prioritise hiring from the surrounding area and ensure equal opportunities for all, advocating for gender inclusivity within our workforce. Through the Gnanam Education Trust (GET), we offer subsidised training for individuals pursuing careers in hospitality, strengthening the local economy.
We also support local artisans by sourcing handmade products for our property and promote traditional crafts through our Semman brand, which works with artisans across the peninsula.
We believe that building sustainable communities is essential for long-term well-being. By fostering environmental awareness and encouraging sustainable practices in local communities, we aim to create a future where people live in harmony with nature. Our community engagement efforts focus on creating a positive impact through education, local partnerships, and environmental stewardship.
As part of our efforts to support the local community, we organise activities like tree planting, beach clean-ups, blood donation drives, and flood relief efforts to create a more resilient and sustainable environment for all.
We strive to lead by example in responsible consumption and production. We grow organic vegetables like Asiatic Pennywort and Water Morning Glory on-site, reducing the need for external sourcing and minimising the carbon footprint of transportation and packaging.

We minimise waste by prioritising sustainable materials, such as biodegradable packaging and paper straws, while reducing reliance on single-use plastics. Our waste management system focuses on recycling, reusing materials, and composting organic waste at Thinnai Farms to nourish the soil. We also serve potable water in sterilised glass bottles within our suites, helping reduce plastic waste. To conserve water, we recycle wastewater for irrigation through our on-site water treatment plant, further lowering consumption.
We are transitioning to digital systems across all departments to reduce paper usage, thereby decreasing our environmental footprint year by year.
We encourage our guests to participate in the ‘I Love Green’ initiative, rewarding those who choose to reuse bed linen and towels. This reduces laundry cycles and contributes to reducing energy and water consumption. For our associates, we observe ‘No-bin Day’ every Friday, when no food waste bins are provided in the meal room. On these days, we also ensure that only entirely edible ingredients are used in meal preparation, avoiding inedible items such as seeds, rinds, and peels.
In 2024, we expanded our sustainability efforts by creating Christmas decorations from recyclable or biodegradable materials, including Christmas trees made from used beer bottles. This ‘Green Christmas’ initiative promotes the values of reduce, reuse, and recycle, and we look forward to continuing this tradition in the future.
Our efforts to combat the climate crisis focus on reducing energy consumption, conserving water, and lowering our carbon footprint. The property’s design incorporates the traditional Tamil ‘thinnai’ concept, optimising natural airflow and reducing the need for air conditioning. We are committed to energy efficiency with technologies like key card-controlled energy management and solar-powered lighting systems. Additionally, we aim to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels by exploring the installation of solar power.
We are also dedicated to reducing water use with our on-site water treatment plant, which reuses wastewater for irrigation, contributing to more sustainable practices. Through these initiatives, we strive to mitigate the climate crisis by adopting environmentally friendly technologies and solutions.
An upcoming mangrove restoration project will further support carbon sequestration, enhance coastal biodiversity, and contribute to climate resilience.
Preserving the environment and supporting biodiversity are at the core of our operations. Our lush gardens, home to both indigenous and exotic species, contribute to the local ecosystem by providing habitat and food sources for local wildlife.
We also prioritise local flora and fauna by planting nectar- and larval-supporting plants for butterflies and bees and by creating water features that sustain aquatic life, including frogs. These actions are integral to our commitment to environmental stewardship, promoting the health and stability of local ecosystems.
Our upcoming mangrove restoration project and ongoing replanting efforts highlight our dedication to preserving and nurturing the natural environment. We are committed to ensuring a healthy, thriving planet for future generations.
