Jaffna in northern Sri Lanka is a stunning place to visit at any time of year. And especially this June, there is yet another reason to travel here- the Nainativu Nahapoosani Amman Kovil Festival.
A beautiful festival celebrated by the Hindus, it revolves around Goddess Parvati, whom the temple is named after. Around 1000 devotees visit the temple each day while it draws as much at 10,000 devotees during the festival time. The temple is extremely symbolic to the Tamil people and it has been mentioned in Tamil Literature from ancient times.
According to legend this temple, located amidst the Palk Strait, was built by Lord Indra in order to prevent the curse of the Gautama Maharishi, an ancient sage. Today, it is said that many couples visit the temple in hopes of urging the gods to grant them the gift of a child.
This year the kovil festival is on the 14th June and goes on till the 29th of June, with the festivities including colorful poojas, chanting, a parade and many rituals carried out as vows before the Gods. The atmosphere is electric as the crowds throng to be a part of the festivities carried out in obeisance to the Gods.
