At The Thinnai, we are committed to promoting sustainability and enhancing the quality of life in local communities. Through our corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, we focus on environmental preservation, community support, and the alignment of our efforts with the Sustainable Development Goals. We believe in the power of impactful, hands-on projects to drive change, and below are some of our key initiatives:
Today, 27th June 2026, marks a proud milestone as The Thinnai celebrates its 10th Anniversary.
Over the past decade, we have been blessed with countless beautiful memories, meaningful friendships, and the unwavering support of our valued guests, associates, and well-wishers. Every moment has shaped our journey and inspired us to keep serving with passion.
To make this milestone even more meaningful, we were delighted to welcome the students of Jaffna Navatkiri AMTM School, Puttur, and donate stationery to support their education. Seeing their smiles reminded us that the greatest celebrations are those that are shared with others.
As we look back with gratitude, we also look forward with hope and commitment to creating many more memorable moments together.
Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey. Your trust and support have made these 10 years truly special. Here’s to many more years of togetherness, kindness, and unforgettable memories!
Our staff came together with joy, creativity, and teamwork to celebrate the spirit of Vesak by creating these beautiful lanterns.
Each lantern was handcrafted using recycled and eco-friendly materials, combining sustainability with tradition and showcasing our commitment to a greener future.
More than just decorations, these lanterns symbolize unity, compassion, peace, and the shared light that brings us together. We are proud to see our team embrace this cherished tradition with such passion and dedication.
The Thinnai Hotel proudly celebrated Earth Day 2026 by organizing an Art Competition and a basic awareness session on garbage segregation for students from Grades 6 to 9 at Urumpurai Sandrothaya Vidyalayam.
Around 28 students participated enthusiastically, showcasing creative and meaningful artwork based on the Earth Day theme. The awareness session encouraged students to understand the importance of responsible waste management and caring for the environment.
We sincerely thank Mr. & Mrs. Niresh Jeganathan for joining us and serving as judges for the competition.
At Thinnai Hotel, we believe that even small initiatives can inspire and motivate young minds, especially in underprivileged schools and communities.
We are proud to announce that The Thinnai – Thinnaveli Property Developers (Pvt) Ltd has successfully obtained the ISO 14064-1:2018 GHG Inventory Verification Certification for the reporting period 1 April 2024 – 31 March 2025.
This certification reflects our ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility, transparency, and sustainable development practices.
This milestone reinforces our dedication to building responsibly while contributing toward a more sustainable future.
We thank our team and stakeholders for supporting our sustainability journey.
Nurturing culinary creativity in young minds.
Held from 12th to 15th April 2025, the inaugural Junior Chef Programme welcomed 17 enthusiastic children to explore the world of culinary arts. Participants were introduced to kitchen etiquette, given guided tours, and took part in hands-on cooking demonstrations. The programme concluded with a culinary contest, where the children showcased their creativity and skills. As the hospitality sector is relatively new to the region, this initiative is part of our broader community upliftment efforts, inspiring young minds to consider careers in the culinary and hospitality industries.
Supporting sustainable energy practices through Earth Hour.
As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, we continue to take part in Earth Hour each year. In 2024, we took part by turning off non-essential electricity and hosting an outdoor dining event illuminated by traditional lighting. This saved 876 units of electricity and encouraged sustainable energy practices.
Supporting ecological research for sustainable conservation.
We proudly sponsored a biodiversity study of Chundikkulam National Park, conducted by the University of Jaffna under the leadership of Professor K. Gajapathy. Published on 15th March 2025, the study explores the park’s diverse ecosystems-from lagoons and sand dunes to unique endemic species-highlighting its ecological richness. This research aims to inform sustainable conservation strategies while balancing ecotourism growth with biodiversity protection. As the first of many collaborative studies with the university, this initiative aligns with our commitment to environmental stewardship and climate resilience.
Bringing hope and resources to underprivileged students.
As part of our ‘The Thinnai for the Community’ programme, we fulfilled the wishes of 25 underprivileged students from J/Nallur Kaasipillai Vidyalayam on 25th February 2025. In December, we invited the students to submit wish lists for school supplies, which were displayed on a wish tree in our lobby. With the support of our guests, we were able to fulfil these wishes by providing the students with the supplies they had requested.
Providing essential supplies during flood recovery efforts.
In response to the November 2024 floods in Jaffna, the Thinnai Employee Welfare Society distributed essential supplies to families at the Jaffna Hindu Ladies’ Primary School, supporting the community during a challenging time.
Raising awareness about the positive impact of tourism.
We celebrated World Tourism Day in 2024 with an art competition at Muthuthamby Maha Vidyalayam, focusing on the theme “Tourism and Peace” to raise awareness about the positive impact of tourism on cultural unity.
Supporting cultural practices at the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil Festival.
During the annual chariot festival at Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil in 2024, we provided refreshments to devotees, strengthening community ties and supporting local cultural practices. This initiative will continue to be a part of our community outreach in the years ahead.
Improving educational access for underprivileged children.
In celebration of our 8th anniversary in 2024, we donated essential stationery supplies to students at Kaladdy Methodist Mission Tamil Mixed School, improving access to educational resources for underprivileged children.
Supporting the local blood bank and saving lives.
Since 2022, we have organised annual blood donation drives, contributing to the local Jaffna Blood Bank and supporting healthcare services while saving lives.
Organising clean-ups to protect Jaffna’s coastline.
Since 2021, we have organised annual beach clean-ups on Earth Day, involving volunteers to clean Jaffna’s coastline. In 2024, we expanded our efforts by partnering with the University of Jaffna’s Department of Media Studies, creating a broader network of support. In 2024 alone, we removed 53.8 kilograms of plastics and other waste from the shoreline.
Enhancing green cover along the Jaffna-Palaly Road.
We are enhancing the green cover along the Jaffna-Palaly Road (AB18) by planting 300 trees. As of now, 50 trees have been planted, and 15 are thriving. This initiative contributes to a greener landscape and helps mitigate climate change.
Teaching sustainable farming practices to students.
We launched an organic agriculture project at Muthuthamby Maha Vidyalayam to teach students about sustainable farming. The initiative includes composting workshops and a community clean-up event, where we demonstrated the value of reusability with an old washbasin repurposed as a water tap station.
